You will first identify at least three media outlets (different media forms or perspectives) reporting on an event that relates to a social issue. Using sources such as articles, television news reports, etc. from those media outlets, you must address the following rubric criteria:
Explain the social elements of the event as reported by each media outlet. Address the following:
How does the event relate to a particular social issue?
What reasons or explanations are given for how or why the event happened?
What actions are being recommended to prevent the event?
Describe how individuals were affected by this major event. Address the following:
What happened to the people directly involved?
What is a characteristic of these individuals that could make this event be considered a social issue (for example, their age, race, gender, ethnicity, country of origin, economic status, etc.)?
Describe how society was affected by this major event. Address the following:
What were the reactions to the event?
How are the reactions similar and different?
Describe how each of the reports from the media outlets influenced how you feel about the core social issue involved. Address the following:
Do you agree or disagree with the reasons given by each media outlet for how the event happened and why?
How does having similar or different characteristics of the people involved influence your feelings about the social issue?
How did your reaction to the event change depending on how the media outlet reported on the event?
