Most of what the typical household throws away can be recycled. First of all, paper products, which make up half of all the trash in the United States, can easily be recycled into new paper. Glass, metal, and plastic—which make up another 24 percent of U.S. waste—are also easily recycled in most communities. In addition, yard and food waste can be turned to soil-enriching compost. Throwing food and plant matter into a local or municipal compost pile removes another 16 percent of waste from landfills. Large items, such as appliances, TV's, furniture, or carpeting, can also be recycled by donating them to technical schools or thrift shops for repair. In an average household, the result of the efforts described above would reduce waste by about 90 percent.
