Literary Heritage of Indonesia
Indonesia's traditional literature echoes those of the literary heritage of Malaysia. The feature of its folk literature that has created an impact outside the country is the famous Wayang Kulit, the Indonesian shadow play. It is a drama form that is usually presented to mark a marriage or a coming of age. It makes use of leather puppets and is presentec by a puppet master called Dalang. When children come to view these plays, they are given the best seats in front. The stories of the Wayang Kulit are based on Hindu legends with "new" characters thrown in by Indonesians themselves. The outstanding political novelists before World War II were Marah Rushi and Mas Marco Kartodikromo Sanusi Pane was both a poet and a playwright of note. At that time, however, the brightest star of Indonesian literature of struggle was Sutan Takdir Alisjabana. A poet, critic and essayist, he exposed his ideas in his novel, Lajar Terkembang The period between 1940-1950 is considered as the highest point in the development of Indonesian fiction and the refinement of Bahasa Indonesia as a literary vehicle. After the war, the so-called Angatan "45 (Generation "45) produced the "committed literature"of Indonesia. Among the luminous names of the period were those of Chairil Anwar and Mochtar Lobis.
