Each time the microscope is improved, cell theory takes a giant step forward. The first microscopes established that cells exist, and the interactions between cells. The next step in microscopes allowed for the detection of the larger structures in the cell, like the nucleus. Then the smaller structures, like the chromosome, then even smaller structures like DNA.
