The Great Compromise, also known as the Connecticut Compromise, was one of the most important compromises reached during the drafting of the United States Constitution in 1787. The delegates were trying to figure out how each state would be represented in Congress. Delegates from states with small populations wanted their states to have the same number of representatives as states with large populations. Otherwise, they figured, they’d always be in the minority, and would be under-represented in Congress. So they proposed a system where all states, regardless of population, would have the same number of Congressional representatives. This was called the New Jersey Plan. (from brainpop)
