Imagine you are a journalist in the Roman Empire. Write an editorial in which you comment—favorably or unfavorably—on Constantine’s decision to move the capital of the empire.

Respuesta :

This is a strange question as there were no real journalists in the Roman empire as we know them today :) What existed in their times were historians who would write down the history of the Roman Empire from their perspective and eyes.

What one could write here would be that the people who lived under his role in the Eastern Roman Empire probably or most likely viewed this decision as a favorable one considering he essentially created a new important trading and commerce hub in their part of the Roman Empire.

Here is my editorial for the "Roman Times."

Great leaders have major decisions to make. And they are great because they dare to make the difficult ones.

This is the case of Emperor Constantine.

Constantine’s decision to move the capital of the empire was a tough one for the meaning Rome has always had as part of the Roman Empire.

However, he had the wit and decisiveness to make a bold decision and move the capital of the Empire to Constantinople, a strategic place to strengthen the power and presence of the Empire in its many territories.

The Roman Emperor chose well.

Constantinople is a strategic place concerning the importance of Europe and Asia. It represents a key trade place where many merchants and ethnicities gather in this cosmopolitan city. Its connection to the sea represented an advantage to the Roman Empire and the mixture of Roman, Greek, and Persian culture favored the commerce exchange.

Without any doubt, the location of Constantinople will allow the emperor to control both land and sea trade routes between Europe and Asia.

And that is a major move with good futuristic probabilities of success.

(End of the Editorial).

We can conclude that Emperor Constantine had to think very well about this decision because it meant a major change for the powerful Roman Empire and change the way many Romans thought about Rome as the capital city of the Empire.
