In 1956 in Montgomery Alabama black folks were not allowed to vote. At the time the bus boycotts were taking place. And people of color were being discriminated.
The buses were segregated black people had to sit at the back of the bus while white people sat in "whites only" seats. If the buses were crowded and a white person had no where to sit a black person would be told to give up their seat. You would not see a black person sitting by a white person. (Rosa Parks was asked to give up her seat but she refused and got arrested. This is one of the things that started protest against segregation)
