there are two couches against a wall. if one takes up 4/9 of the wall and the other takes up 1/5 of the wall, how much of the wall is covered by couches?

4/9+1/5=20/45+9/45=29/45 of the wall is covered up by two couches

we know that

One of the couches takes up [tex]4/9[/tex] of the wall and the other takes up  [tex]1/5[/tex] of the wall

so

To find out how much of the wall is covered by couches, add the two amounts

[tex]\frac{4}{9} +\frac{1}{5} =\frac{(5*4+9*1)}{9*5}=\frac{29}{45}[/tex]

therefore

the answer is

[tex]\frac{29}{45}[/tex] of the wall is covered by couches
