„The Good Soldier Svejk“ (the full title: The Fateful Adventures of
the Good Soldier Svejk During the World War) is a satirical novel by Chezh writer Jaroslav Hasek.
It is about adventures of Chezh soldier Svejk during the World War I. Hasek
describes many comic and absurd sutuations and points out that many Chezh
soldiers were fighting in the great war without even understanding its meaning.
The central motive in the novel is Svejk's attitude towards the war and, as
well, towards the Austria-Hungarian Army, which he is a part of. He displays
such enthusiasm towards serving the Austrian Emperor that no body can really
figure out is he imbecile or is he constantly making fun of all authorities.
